Walter Schels (*1936)deals with extreme situations in human life like no other photographer of his generation. He became known for his portraits of celebrities such as Angela Merkel, Yehudi Menuhin, Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys and the Dalai Lama. His photographic work has earned him a reputation as a thoughtful existentialist in the field of contemporary portrait photography.

Beate Lakotta (*1965) is the author and editor of several books and was a reporter for the news magazine DER SPIEGEL.


Beate Lakotta and Walter Schels live together in Hamburg.


“We all know that one day we will die.But it's hard to believe that it will really happen to ourselves.With this project we wanted to overcome our own fears when dealing with death and dying.”
